The Kids on the Block
The Kids on the Block is a troupe of puppets who travel to schools in Sussex, Warren, and Morris counties to present a variety of educational programs for children in grades K-8. Initially launched as a vehicle to acquaint children with various disabilities, the Kids on the Block programs have expanded to include a wide range of issues addressing the safety and well-being of children and the prevention of mental retardation and other developmental disabilities. The puppeteers use almost life-size hand and rod puppets in a technique based on Japanese Bunraku puppetry. Wearing black, the puppeteers are visible but become the shadows of the puppets.
Developmental Disabilities, Bullies and School Safety, Child Abuse, Substance Abuse, AIDS, Cultural Differences, Violence Prevention, and Racial Prejudice are among the Kids on the Block shows lauded by educators, health professionals, parents, and those who love them best: kids themselves. A maximum of 50 students can attend each performance.
