"Supporting Children and Adults with Developmental Disabilities with Recreational Opportunities."
Community recreation is a vital part of the large repertoire of services provided by SCARC, Inc. to children and adults with disabilities in Sussex County. Recreation services enhance the quality of life of individuals served by SCARC, and offer regular and special events tailored to the needs and ages of each person served at SCARC.
SCARC interfaces with New Jersey Special Olympics to provide a variety of Special Olympics trainings and competitions so that individuals with disabilities can join athletes from throughout the state of New Jersey in a variety of regional and statewide competitions. SCARC provides Special Olympics swimming, bowling, golf, power lifting, basketball, Winter Olympic Games, and track and field events.
Recreational activities are typically held in small groups to enhance interpersonal relationships and to promote the development of relationships with others who are involved in the SCARC family of services. Some of these events include various outings, dining out, art and music classes, hiking and sports activities. SCARC's larger group recreation activities are held on a periodic and seasonal basis to allow for people to engage in holiday celebrations, dances, picnics and outings so that people can look forward to festive opportunities for friendship and life enjoyment.
SCARC’s One Accord Choir meets on a weekly basis to provide an opportunity for singing, learning music, and providing small concerts for appreciative audiences.
SCARC’s YACHT Club provides exciting activities and events for our individuals in their 20’s. The Club meets weekly, and it is a continuation of SCARC’s Teen Scene program for teens.
SCARC’s recreation programs include transportation when possible and accompanying trained staff in order to promote a full enjoyment of the recreation experience. SCARC’s recreation staff and program plans interface with SCARC residential and day program services so that each person served by SCARC is afforded an opportunity to participate in our enriching recreation experiences. SCARC takes advantage of the multiple rural Sussex County recreational opportunities as well as out of county locations, in order to provide an inclusive quality of life experience to all SCARC participants.
For more information about Recreation events, see our quarterly Recreation newsletter, Out and About, or contact the Recreation Department at the SCARC office.
