SCARC has provided residential services to adults with developmental disabilities since 1980.  Currently we operate 17 group homes and 13 supportive living apartments in Sussex County.  SCARC serves 120 individuals in our residential services.

SCARC’s residential programs afford a high quality of life for those who live within our organization. Each residential facility employs trained staff in order to provide the necessary supports that each individual requires. Each individual living in SCARC’s residential services participates in an interdisciplinary team to develop an Individual Habilitation Plan which includes goals and objectives to promote and enhance each persons quality of life.  Each of the residents of SCARC homes and apartments participate in activities of daily living, as well as, chores around the house and apartment in order to fully participate in ones living environment. 

SCARC group homes vary in number of residents from 3 persons to 7 depending on the size and location of the home.  Many of our residents move directly from their local Sussex County homes into the group home when they enter SCARC’s residential system. Other people come from outside the county and from New Jersey developmental centers. Every effort is made to serve people from Sussex County or who have families in Sussex County.  SCARC also provides Individualized Living Programs designed to support people who have unique needs to make their community inclusions successful.

All of our group homes and most of our apartments are licensed by the New Jersey Department of Human Services on an annual basis. Addionally, all programs are inspected and evaluated each year by SCARC’s Safety Committee of the Board of Trustees.

Most SCARC group homes have been financially underwritten by the New Jersey Division of Developmental Disabilities. Two of SCARC’s group homes have been donated by families whose adult child with developmental disabilities reside in the home. Four of our homes were built or purchased with assistance from the US Department of Agriculture, Rural Development agency.

Many of our residents obtain Section 8 housing subsidies in order to allow them an opportunity for rental assistance. All individuals who reside in SCARC residential services are eligible for supplemental security income from the Social Security Administration.
