"Supporting Seniors with Developmental
Disabilities in the Community."

As health care and medical technology make significant advances, people with developmental disabilities are living longer, and society is making plans to incorporate these people into the mainstream of the community.

Persons with developmental disabilities grow older at faster rates and in more prominent ways than the non-disabled population.

Many persons with developmental disabilities reach points of aging while in their late 30’s and early 40’s.  Many will develop Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, and will require significant supports to navigate their later years.

Persons with developmental disabilities are faced with the challenges of retirement, and need enjoyable supports to help them in their later years.

Many older people with developmental disabilities do not have family members to care for them, and aging parents look to SCARC for assistance and counsel during these vulnerable years.

SCARC, Inc. recognizes the need to provide services for seniors with disabilities as part of its commitment to community services in Sussex County.

Older persons with disabilities need companionship, activity, and meaning in life.  SCARC assures that each person in its care will receive appropriate social care, meaningful activities, and proper nourishment. The SCARC Senior Center in Andover Township supports 26 individuals with disabilities on a daily routine to enrich their lives and provide activities to foster everyone’s quality of life.  SCARC also offers adaptive recreation services to seniors so as to keep people active in their daily routine. Outings, trips, sports, and social gatherings are designed to enrich peoples’ lives.

SCARC collaborates with other established community organizations for seniors to assure that persons with developmental disabilities are included in community resources.

“As people at SCARC are aging, the services SCARC offers are very valuable to each family,” states a Sussex County agency director.
